Real Madrid Secures La Liga Crown

Real Madrid has won its first Spanish La Liga since 2007-08 and its 32nd in its history with a 3-0 win at Athletic Bilbao on Wednesday clinching the title.

Real Madrid has won its first Spanish La Liga since 2007-08 and its 32nd in its history with a 3-0 win at Athletic Bilbao on Wednesday clinching the title.

Goals from Gonzalo Higuain, Mesut Ozil and Cristiano Ronaldo - the latter who was heavily involved in all three - sealed the triumph as Real made light work of the difficult trip to face a side who have qualified for both the Copa del Rey and Europa League finals.

The result moved Real seven points clear of their rivals with two games to play meaning they celebrated the crown at the final whistle, which ended Barcelona’s recent dominance of the Spanish league.

Jose Mourinho told RealMadridTV: “It’s been a great title for us, no-one has given us anything all season, we’ve fought from start to finish, the players have been fantastic and deserve it.

“I’ve won titles before in Portugal, Italy and England but this has been the most difficult of all. I think even Barca, after they’ve won three titles in a row, know that we deserve this one.”

Real captain Iker Casillas added: “It has been a very long and hard season but we have taken a step forward in terms of quality compared to last year. It was tough to end Barca’s run as this is a new project and we are a young squad but I think we already improved last year and even more so this year.”

Madrid defender Sergio Ramos also said: “We are very happy after winning a very closely-fought championship against a very strong Barcelona. Madrid deserve the title and we dedicate it to all the fans.”
