Spanish fourth seed David Ferrer reached the 2012 US Open semifinals after a thrilling five-set classic against Serbian Janko Tipsarevic on Thursday.
The Spaniard triumphed after more than four-and-a-half hours of tennis, winning 6-3, 6-7 (7-5), 2-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) over the eighth seed, who was up a break in the final set.
“I don’t have words. It was a very emotional match,” Ferrer said.
He added: “It was a really, really tough match. Janko — he’s an amazing player… and he also deserves to win today.”
Ferrer will now face the winner of Novak Djokovic and Juan Martin Del Potro in the semifinals and the Spaniard said he’d been receiving plenty of encouragement from his injured compatriot Rafael Nadal.
“I talk with Rafa these days, like text, private conversation,” Ferrer said.
“Of course Rafael is always happy when I win matches. If I will win Saturday I will talk with him for sure. He texted me today. He say, ‘Good luck’. Nothing special.”
