Day three was a day of carnage for some of the top women’s seeds at the 2012 Wimbledon Championships as Caroline Wozniacki, Li Na and Samantha Stosur all crashed out in the second round.
Wozniacki was the big loser going down 5-7, 7-6 (7-4), 6-4 to in-form Austrian Tamira Paszek on centre court, while at the same venue Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic both progressed with a comfortable straight-set triumphs over Fabio Fognini and Ryan Harrison respectively.
The Dane, who had qualified beyond the first round in the past 20 Grand Slams, appeared tetchy after the match and snapped at suggestions her relationship with golfer Rory McIlroy affected her performance.
Wozniacki told reporters: “(It) really sucks when you lose. Especially after having two match points and not taking them. It wasn’t because I played badly. She just went for it, and that’s it.
“I just need to move forward. You can’t dwell in your past but move forward, look forward. That’s it.”
Meanwhile, last year’s US Open champion Stosur’s awful Wimbledon run continued as she went down 6-2, 0-6, 6-4 to Arantxa Rus.
“It’s disappointing because you want to do well here. It’s a great tournament,” she said. “Overall, I’m happier with the way it’s gone this year - still disappointed. I think it can and probably should be better.”
Elsewhere, Belgian Kim Clijsters went through with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Andrea Hlavackova on centre court.
Li Na, Dominika Cibulkova and Petra Cetkovska were the other seeds to bow out in the women’s, while Swiss Stanislas Wawrinka was the only male seed to exit.
