Womens’ world number one Victoria Azarenka says “pretty much everything” went wrong as she crashed out of the French Open following a straight-set defeat to Slovakian 15th seed Dominika Cibulkova on Sunday.
The Belarussian had started the year in blistering form, winning 26 consecutive matches including the Australian Open title, but struggled all week at Roland Garros before being bundled out 6-2, 7-6.
“I don’t know how to describe my performance really today,” Azarenka said after the defeat.
“It wasn’t satisfying at all. It wasn’t satisfying being out there playing that way. But I guess it happens.
“I don’t know even what to find positive in my performance today. Maybe in a few hours I’ll find something that I can be happy with.”
The result means Cibulkova will next face sixth-seed Sam Stosur in the quarter-finals, while Sara Errani and Angelique Kerber will also face off.
Elsewhere, Li Na, Maria Sharapova and Petra Kvitova all remain in the hunt, with fourth round matches to come.
