At the China Open, currently top-seeded Novak Djokovic was victorious after he defeated Spain’s David Ferrer in a 6-2, 6-4 match, successfully defending his China Open title. The victory also marks Djokovic’s second championship for the year.
As for the women, also top-seeded Caroline Wozniacki defeated Vera Zvonareva in a 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 match.
Djokovic is currently ranked at No. 2 in the world, and was able to cruise through the first set of his match against Ferrer. However, by the second set, he struggled a bit and fell behind 4-2.
By the time the match reached 4-3, Ferrer, currently No. 8 in the world, worked hard to hold the service and defend his lead. However, Djokovic proved to be relentless and soon broke him and evened out the set. After two games later, it was Djokovic who walked away with the victory.
According to Djokovic, “I started off really well but then I lost the momentum. I kind of lost the rhythm, got him back into the match with some unforced errors…It wasn’t a really nice looking match from both sides. We made a lot of unforced errors, especially him. He made my life a little bit easier at the end of the second set, where, with his unforced errors, I got back into the set.”
As for Wozniacki, she said, “I thought in general I played a really, really good amtch… I just stayed focused, I kept running, I tried to keep the pressure on her, tried to keep her moving and I thought we played a really, really good match.”
