With a victory against a Williams sister on her trail, Kim Clijsters went face to face with Vera Zvonareva at the final round of the U.S. Open attempting to make a comeback victory.
Clijsters had her eye on the prize and went for it, while Zvonareva waltzed right into the U.S. Open’s final round without losing a single set throughout the tournament. In fact, she toppled over the women’s top seed while at it. For the most part, Zvonareva even managed to keep her notorious combustible emotions in check.
However, despite all efforts made by Zvonareva, everything withered when she came against Kim Clijsters who brought with her an unrelenting defense matched with a determination and drive to win the title. As a result, Clijsters fought her way to the top achieving her third U.S. Open championship title in a 6-2, 6-1 game in just 59 minutes.
The match was deemed as one of the most lopsided victories in the women’s tournament of the U.S. Open since Chris Evert won against Evonne Goolagong in 1976.
For her achievement, Clijsters took home a whopping $2.2 million which includes a $1.7 million winner’s cheque as well as $500,000.00 for finishing second in the U.S. Open Series which had preceded this year’s major.
