Evonne Fay Goolagong Cawley AC MBE (née Goolagong) was born on July 31, 1951 in Griffith, New South Wales in Australia. She stands 168 cm tall and she is right-handed with a one-handed backhand. She is from an Australian Aboriginal family.

Her first coach was Vic Edwards, the proprietor of a tennis school in Sydney. With Edwards’ help, she moved to Sydney to attend the Willoughby Girls High School. In her professional career, she earned a total of US$ 1,399,431 in prize money.

Career

As a singles player, she has 86 career titles. In 1971, she was ranked Number 1 by Lance Tingay. Later in 1976, she was officially ranked Number 1 by the WTA.

In total, she has four Australian Open singles titles, one French Open singles title, and two Wimbledon singles titles. She has also made it to four US Open finals but was defeated by fellow big names in tennis at the time including Margaret Court, Chris Evert, and Billie Jean King.

In addition to her singles wins, she also has 6 women’s doubles grand slam titles – winning 5 in the Aussie Open and one in Wimbledon. In 1972, she also won the mixed doubles title at the French Open.
