Williams and Jankovic reach the Paris quarterfinals

Despite being reportedly sick and bedridden for the last week, Serena Williams did not show any sign of weakness or hints of her sickness when she defeated Karolina Sprem in their game for the quarterfinals of the Open GDF Suez last Thursday.

Williams last played tennis during the Australian Open – which she won – and was out of practice until Monday. However, this obviously did not hinder her participation as she was able to get through the first round of the tournament where she won two times.

Next in line to fight Williams will be Emilie Loit, who she has not played against in around six years. Williams’ memory about Loit is still fresh as she revealed that Loit is a lefty who uses lots of slices and spins. She declares that Loit is “a very experienced player and tricky.”

Aside from Williams and Loit, Jelena Jankovic, Elena Dementieva, Alize Cornet, and Amelie Mauresmo will be joining them in the quarterfinals of the said tournament. To date, Amelie Mauresmo has the record of having the most wins in the history of the tournament.

Jankovic lost her No. 1 standing when she was defeated in the fourth round of the Australian Open. During this tournament, she had to get past Chinese player, Li Na, to get into the quarterfinals.
