Tottenham have a realistic chance of lifting the Europa League this season and should progress at the expense of Lyon in the last 32 on Thursday.
Only Chelsea and Anzi currently appear shorter in the outright market than the White Hart Lane club and Tottenham manager Andre Villas-Boas certainly has his eyes on some silverware.
Villas-Boas has changed Tottenham’s style of play having taken over from Harry Redknapp and Spurs are a lot more measured in their approach this season.
That will certainly help away from home in the Europa League and Spurs hold a 2-1 advantage from the first leg in London.
In Gareth Bale, Tottenham arguably have Europe’s most in-form footballer right now and there is no chance their talisman is rested by AVB in France.
The Portuguese knows Bale’s importance to Tottenham’s chances of success against the Ligue 1 club and it was the former Southampton trainee who scored a brace last week to sink the visitors.
Bale’s importance should not be underestimated but Tottenham are far from a one-man side and it is now ten Premier League matches unbeaten.
Spurs have conceded just five goals in that period and if they can have a decent amount of possession tonight at Stade Gerland then they should be able to contain their hosts.
Remi Garde, the former Arsenal player, has seen his team lose three of their last four fixtures and Lyon will do well to keep that all important clean sheet.
Spurs drew each of their three group games on their travels and that result would do very nicely indeed once again.
