The result keeps Real four points clear of Barcelona and the Portuguese insisted it was a big win for his side but the job is far from done.
“There is a lot left, but winning La Liga has got closer now,” Ronaldo told reporters. “There was pressure on us because we knew Barcelona had won their match. We are still four points clear.”
He added: “We knew this was going to be a tough match, but we gave a good account of ourselves against a very strong Atletico side.”
Along with taking his season tally above the half-century mark, Ronaldo’s hat-trick on Wednesday also took him to 40 strikes in La Liga this term.
He continued: “I am very happy to have scored and picked up an assist. We have to continue like this. I am very happy, but without my team-mates I could not have done it.”
Meanwhile, Ronaldo’s team-mate Sergio Ramos labelled the Portuguese the ‘best player in the world’ after his key hat-trick.
“Cristiano Ronaldo is the best player in the world. We’re lucky to train with him every day and to have him with us,” Ramos told reporters.
“Taking three points was vital after drawing against Valencia. A team like Real Madrid lives with pressure, but we know how to withstand it and we have to be ready for everything. Each match is a matter of life and death.
“We earned an important victory. Everything turned out well and we’re calm. We don’t think Barcelona are going to drop many points, but we depend on ourselves and our four-point cushion allows us to keep up the good work.”
