FC Barcelona v Arsenal @ Nou Camp

First Leg Arsenal 2 (van Persie 78’, Arshavin 83’) Barcelona 1 (David Villa 26’)

Form Barcelona are storming towards the Spanish La Liga title, with their nearest rivals Real Madrid unable to keep up with their pace. Barca won 1-0 on the weekend at Real Zaragoza, with Lionel Messi providing the assist. Interesingly, Barcelona’s only loss in La Liga this term, came at Nou Camp. Otherwise they’ve won their past four La Liga matches.

Arsenal are second in England’s Premier League, only three points behind leaders Manchester United with a game in hand. It’s promising for the Gunners but their recent results might hint otherwise after a goalless draw with Sunderland on Saturday, along with last week’s disappointing Carling Cup final loss 2-1 to Birmingham City.

Team news Barcelona have defensive problems for this clash with Gerard Pique suspended and Carles Puyol injured. That may mean Sergi Busquets starts as a makeshift central defender.

Arsenal have included Robin van Persie in the squad for this match, but he will face a late fitness test on his knee. Guardiola has defensive issuesThere’s more concrete news for the Gunners with Cesc Fabregas ready after a hamstring injury and Jack Wilshere> shrugging off an ankle complaint. But Alex Song (knee), Theo Walcott (ankle) and Thomas Vermaelen (Achilles) all miss out.

Coaches

Pep Guardiola: “We will attack – you can rest assured that we will try to win and do all we can. Our target is what we have to do to beat them, that’s the only important thing in this kind of match.

“Arsenal aren’t a mentally fragile side. They are competing at the top of the table for their league title and every season they do well in the Champions League.”

Arsene Wenger: “For us it is the next game, and we have had a very strong run and we have done very well. It’s our next game and we want to stay in the competition. If you ask any player, he will give his life to win this match.

“Both sides have similar philosophies and both want to win trying to play good football. For us one of the problems is to get away from Barcelona’s pressure and we shall see how we can do that.”

Shakhtar Donetsk v AS Roma @ Donbass Arena

Roma must win in Ukraine>

First Leg AS Roma 2 (Perrotta 28’, Menez 61’) Shakhtar Donetsk 3 (Jadson 29’, Douglas Costa 36’, Luiz Adriano 42’)

Form Shakhtar were finally back in action after over three months winter break domestically, resuming in dramatic style with a 1-0 win at Sevastopol thanks to Luiz Adriano’s 90th-minute goal. Shakhtar are 12 points clear in Ukraine, crucially with a perfect home record with 10 wins from 10 games. As well, Shakhtar are unbeaten at home since Donbass Arena opened in 2009.

AS Roma are currently sixth in Serie A, after Claudio Ranieri’s recent dismissal as manager. Former player Vincenzo Montella is now in charge and they are unbeaten in their past three Serie A matches and remain in the hunt for the top four although they needed an injury-time David Pizarro goal to defeat Lecce 2-1 on the weekend.

Team news Shakhtar will be at full-strength except for the absent Olexandr Kucher through a knee injury. Brazilian star Fernandinho is back after a broken leg.

Roma have some major issues for a game they must win with both Jeremy Menez and Marco Cassetti suspended for the clash. Out-of-sorts Brazilian striker Adriano is available for selection after a shoulder injury.

Shakhtar to make history?>

Coaches

Mircea Lucescu: “Since Vincenzo Montella’s appointment Roma have changed their style. I have a feeling that the days of Luciano Spalletti are returning. The absence of Marco Cassetti and Jérémy Menez through suspension will not weaken Roma: they have enough top-class players to replace them.”

Vincenzo Montella: “Shakhtar are a well-organised team. We have all had a chance to assess them from their performance in Rome. It is very important to not let them play the way they want to. I am very optimistic about our chances to win here. Roma have great potential, but we must all pull together if we are to win.”
