Chelsea got back on track in England with an emphatic 7-0 thrashing of midtable Stoke City. Manchester United remain ready to pounce following their solid 3-1 win over Tottenham with Ryan Giggs scoring two, but it now seems Wayne Rooney will miss the run-in due to injury.

In the race for Champions League football, Tottenham’s loss at Old Trafford has opened it up and Aston Villa are up to fifth following a 1-0 derby win over Birmingham City. Manchester City drew 0-0 at Arsenal to stay in the hunt, while Liverpool’s 4-0 win at Burnley gives them hope.

In the drop zone, West Ham look safe after their 3-2 win over Wigan which left Burnley and Hull gone. Hull City are all but down following a 1-0 home loss which has them six points from safety and needing to make up a significant amount in goal difference.

AS Roma surrendered the Scudetto advantage after losing 2-1 at home to Sampdoria, with Giampaolo Pazzini grabbing a double. Champions League semi-finalists Inter Milan had a 3-1 victory over Atalanta on Saturday which takes them into top spot with three games to play.

Sampdoria’s win, their fourth in a row, takes them closer to Champions League qualification, but Palermo hung in there after an impressive 3-1 victory over third-placed AC Milan. Milan now have no hope of winning the title.

In the relegation battle it almost appears settled. Livorno are down despite a 3-1 win over Catania, while Siena’s 4-1 defeat by Udinese has them all but relegated. Lazio beat Genoa 2-1, while Bologna defeated Parma 2-1 to put 18th-placed Atalanta in a precarious spot, five points from safety.

Heiko Westermann’s late strike saw Schalke 04 level terms with Bayern Munich at the top in Germany, claiming a 1-0 win over bottom-club Hertha Berlin. Elsewhere, Bayern needed a Miroslav Klose goal to salvage a 1-1 draw at Borussia Moenchengladbach.

In the Champions League battle, Werder Bremen remain third after a 1-0 win over FC Koln, but the pressure is still there with Leverkusen ending their form slump with a 3-0 win over Hannover 96 and Dortmund won 3-2 at FC Nurnberg.

Down the bottom, all bottom four clubs lost, but 14th-placed SC Freiburg claimed a 1-0 victory over VfL Wolfsburg which almost assures their safety. It all makes for a massive final day when VfL Bochum are scheduled to host Hannover 96.

Raul and Kaka got the goals as Real Madrid won 2-1 at Real Zaragoza, but Barcelona remain on top of the table after a 3-1 victory over Xerez. With four games to go, it is getting tense.

In the race for Champions League football, Sevilla’s 4-3 loss to Getafe sees them stuck in fifth, while Real Mallorca missed the chance to seal fourth spot after only managing a 1-1 home draw with Malaga.

At the wrong end, two goals in the final 10 minutes saw Valladolid claim a crucial 2-0 win at Gijon which takes to within two points of safety. Tenerife and Xerez both lost this weekend and are struggling.

Galatasaray fans, who are fierce rivals with Istanbul club Fenerbahce, may feel aggrieved to have done their rivals a favour but suddenly with three games to go Fener look title favourites.
