British tabloid News of the World has quoted the Liverpool manager as saying that contract negotiations with the club’s American co-owners have been going on and that a contract extension is only a few days away.

Rafa Benitez was appointed the manager of Liverpool in 2004 and he has since led the club to a UEFA Champions League triumph and a FA Cup conquest. But last season there were considerable dubts on his future at Anfield as relationships between him and Tom Hicks and George Gillett broke down.

But the damage seems to have been repaired since and it now appears that the American duo is eager to let the former Valencia coach sustain his managerial position at Liverpool.

Benitez is quoted as saying:

“My advisers were in contact with them and we are waiting for a new contract right now. Sooner rather than later we will have another communication.”

Rafael Benitez was thought to be on the radar of reigning Spanish champions and European powerhouse Real Madrid and it is being said that it was these rumours that Real could appoint him as their coach that spurred on the Americans to finally agree to a contract extension.
