Gerrard has revealed that he never should have thought of leaving the club where he grew up. The England international midfielder was twice the subject of heavy speculation and both times it was Liverpool’s Premier League rivals Chelsea who were hunting him.

Chelsea made a bid of 20 million pounds for Gerrard in 2004 and increased that bid to 32 million pounds in 2005. In 2005 Gerrard went as far as to draft in a transfer request but he eventually stayed on with Liverpool and is still a legend at Anfield.

Speaking of the old ghosts, the Liverpool captain said:

“It’s only as you get older though that you realise how important playing for Liverpool is.

“You cannot grasp that when you are setting out, so maybe that is why I look at things a bit differently.

“Looking back, I’m pleased how I have reacted. From the bad tackles and sending offs, to all the talk of a Chelsea move, which I regret getting involved in, and the own goal in the cup final.

“Without the setbacks, I don’t think I’d have achieved as much as I have.”
