Leksands IF was founded on August 13, 1919, originally engaging in various sports, including bandy and soccer. The team transitioned to ice hockey in 1938 and quickly made an impact, defeating Mora IK with a stunning score of 11-0 in their inaugural match. Although the small town of Leksand has a population of just 6,000, the club has surged in popularity, consistently drawing large crowds to their matches.

From 1951 to 2001, Leksands IF firmly established itself in Sweden's top hockey division, enjoying a particularly successful stretch from 1969 to 1975 when they claimed the Swedish championship four times. Despite their strong performances, including being runners-up in earlier leagues, they have yet to capture an SHL championship title, although they have finished first in the regular season on multiple occasions during the 1980s and 1990s.

The club faced challenges after being relegated to HockeyAllsvenskan in April 2001. They fluctuated between divisions in the subsequent years but struggled to regain their top status until the 2012-13 season when they finally secured their place back in the SHL by triumphing in Kvalserien.
