Anssi Salmela is a Finnish defenseman on the New Jersey Devils.
Salmela began his career in 2003 with Tappara in the SM-liiga. He spent three seasons there before spending two years with the Pelicans. He emerged as a solid two-way defensemen with the Pelicans, and returned to Tappara for a final season, where he had 16 goals and 32 points. That season earned him a contract with the New Jersey Devils, but he spent most of the 2008-09 season in the minors. He was traded to Atlanta at the 2009 trade deadline. He played 29 games for the Thrashers in 2009-10 before being traded back to the Devils at the 2010 trade deadline as part of the Ilya Kovalchuk trade. He is a well-regarded prospect for the Devils’ blueline and could be poised for a breakout season in a stable playing environment.
Salmela played for Finland at the 2004 World Juniors and the 2008 World Championships, winning bronze medals at both tournaments.
