Chipchura was drafted 18th overall by Montreal in 2004, and continued playing in the WHL until he was called up to Hamilton in the AHL in 2006. He played well in Hamilton and earned himself a few call-ups to Montreal during the 2007-08 season, scoring 11 points in 36 games. In ’08-’09, he spent most of the season in the AHL again. In 2009, he began the season with the Canadiens, but was traded to Anaheim for a 2011 4th round pick. In Anaheim, he finally began to see his game improve and he scored 6 goals and 12 points along with 56 penalty minutes in the last 55 games of the '09-10 season.

Chipchura was the team captain for the 2006 Team Canada gold medal-winning team at the World Junior Championships.
