In 1996, he was traded to Los Angeles, where he developed into a top-level defenseman. In 2001-02, Modry had 38 assists and 42 points, earning him his first trip to the NHL All-Star Game. He was signed by Atlanta after the lockout, and was traded to Dallas for the 2006-07 season. At the deadline, he was sent back to Los Angeles.
At the 2008 trade deadline, with Los Angeles well out of the playoff hunt, he was traded to Philadelphia for a 3rd round draft pick.
