The Kontinental Hockey League was formed in 2008 and replaced the former Russian Super Hockey League as it merged its 21 teams with three teams from Latvia, Belarus and Kazakstan. Much like the NHL concludes with the Stanley Cup playoffs, the KHL is finalized with the Gagarin Cup.
