The Battle of Pennsylvania is over, although many in Philadelphia will be wishing it wasn’t. In a hostile Wachovia Center in Game 6, the Pittsburgh Penguins played spectacular hockey over the final two periods of the series, finishing with five unanswered goals to eliminate their long time rivals. While fans chanted “Crosby Sucks,” the young star quietly went about his business as he had all series, scoring both the game-tying and series-clinching goals. >
The Flyers went up 3-0 early in the second on Daniel Briere’s powerplay goal. However, almost immediately afterwards, Pittsburgh forward Maxime Talbot challenged the much larger Daniel Carcillo to drop the gloves and then took a beating to wake up his teammates. The plan must have worked, because the Penguins would score 3 goals in the 2nd period, including Crosby’s marker late in the period to tie it. In the 3rd period, it was all Pittsburgh, as Sergei Gonchar put the Penguins up for good with his goal 2 minutes into the frame. Crosby would ice the game with an empty net tally in the closing seconds.
Pittsburgh must await the outcomes of the other two series in the Eastern Conference to determine who they will play in the next round. Unless Washington and Carolina both come back to win their respective series, the Pens will play New Jersey in the 2nd round.
