*Boston Bruins (24-5-4, 52 pts) * In Boston, the Bruins have quietly put together one of the most complete package teams in the league. While no one could have predicted that Tim Thomas and Manny Fernandez would be the top goaltending tandem in the league this season, their emergence has been one of the prime factors in the Bruins’ rise to dominance. The Bruins have the lowest goals against average in the league, at 2.21, despite ranking in the bottom half of the league in shots allowed per game. Fernandez has lost only 3 games in 15 starts, and has lost only 1 start since losing in a shootout to Buffalo back in October. Thomas has been just as solid, with only one regulation loss since October. When any team has goaltending like this, their chances for success dramatically increase. Tim Thomas>

However, the Boston Bruins are not just a defensive juggernaut. They currently lead the league in offense, scoring an average of 3.7 goals per game, giving them nearly a goal and a half of positive differential between their goals for and goals against. Phil Kessel and Marc Savard are both on pace to hit 100 points this season, while Zdeno Chara and Dennis Wideman have contributed from the point. Even fan favorite Milan Lucic has managed to stop devastating opposing players with his league leading 133 hits long enough to put together 23 points (Lucic finished last season with only 27 points).

Much of the B’s offensive success has come from the powerplay, which Chara anchors from the point (11 of Chara’s 19 points are on the powerplay). With contributions from all over the ice, the Bruins have the second ranked powerplay in the league at 27.5%. Only Philadelphia> has more powerplay goals, but the Flyers have had 14 more powerplays so far this season. Boston has scored 33 of their 122 goals on the powerplay. (Message to the rest of the league: stay out of the box?)
