Two more matches will be played on Tuesday as the action moves ahead in Group B of the Champions League. In the evening encounter, Highveld Lions will square up against Chennai Super Kings.
A 14-run defeat was how Chennai Super Kings got their campaign started in a high-scoring match against Sydney Sixers.
The Sixers piled on too many runs in the last few overs as MS Dhoni’s bowlers struggled to stem the flow of runs.
Doug Bollinger and Ben Hilfenhaus were both ineffective when wickets were expected of them.
Despite the fact that Dhoni admitted they got outdone by a far better team, there is no denying the fact that his own team did not live up to its reputation.
Only Suresh Raina and Faf du Plessis were able to show some resistance with the bat while the others crumbled under the pressure of a mounting run rate.
Michael Hussey will be expected to deliver a flying start in order to post a good total. Another defeat will seriously dampen the chances of Chennai Super Kings progressing through.
Highveld Lions, in contrast, could not have asked for a better start to their tournament as they reached their victory target with seven balls to spare.
It turned out to be an easy run chase in the end thanks to a calculated partnership between Neil McKenzie and Quinton de Kock.
Alviro Petersen, the captain, was obviously delighted and hopes to continue the good form in the coming matches to strengthen their chances of a progression to the next rounds.
With the ball, Sohail Tanvir and Dirk Nannes were the pick of the bowlers and helpful conditions once again will be something that they will be looking forward to.
The match will be played in Cape Town starting at 5.30pm local time.
