Double dribbling

rules

Double Dribbling is a violation in the sport of basketball. This happens when the player, triples the ball, holds the ball, and then attempts to double it again without attempting to make a shot or passing it.

Dribbling is the only legal way that a player can move a ball around the court. The NBA’s official guidelines list a number of reasons when a dribble can legally stop.

If the dribble is stopped and the ball is not passed or if a shot is not attempted and instead, the player dribbles the dead ball again, this is considered a double dribble violation.

Also, if the player touches the ball more than once while dribbling it before it touches the floor that is considered to be a double trouble as well.

Only the referee can call a double dribble and will do so by blowing the whistle to signal a violation placing both their hands out with their palms facing the ground.

There are some exceptions to the double dribble rule. If the ball is knocked out of their hands, they can pick up the ball again. The action resets their dribble time.

Their dribble time can also be reset if their shot hits the rim and they grab the rebound ball.

A common strategy with players is bouncing the ball off a defender in order to reset a player’s dribble time.

Example of Use:

- Stephen Curry was speeding down the court with the ball but was stopped near the lane by a double dribbling violation.
