The Ohio Bobcats men’s basketball team plays at the Mid-American Conference in the NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) Division I. They represent the Ohio University in men’s basketball championships. The team is presently coached by John Groce who is into his debut season with the program. They play home games at the Convocation Centre which can seat 13,080 spectators at a time. Nicknamed as the Bobcats, the team plays wearing their green and white colored uniform.
The team played their first ever match back in 1907 and celebrated with a win over the Parkerburg YMCA (Young Men’s Christian Association). They went on to win five consecutive games in their debut season led by head coach, James Jones. In 1919, the program took in Frank Gullum who stayed with the team for two years and helped them reach a record of 15-2 for his very first season with the Bobcats.
In recent times, current coach, John Groce has joined the program a year back and is the sixteenth coach overall for the players. Prior to be serving as a head coach, Groce has had fourteen years of experience as an assistant coach. Groce had stepped into the shoes of O’Shea who was with the team from 2001 till 2008. He led the team to the 2004-05 season with astounding records of 13-1 at The Convo.
The team has won the Conference regular season championship 13 times three of which when they were part of the BBA (Basketball Association of America) and once when they were part of the OAC (Ohio Athletic Conference).
They have also won the Conference Tournament title 4 times.
The team has participated in the NCAA Tournament 11 times, having reached the sweet sixteen round twice and the Elite Eight round once.
