One of the professional basketball teams the plays with the Asociación de Clubs de Baloncesto (ACB) is the Club Baloncesto Gran Canaria - Claret, S.A.D, or simply, CB Gran Canaria. The team represents the Canary Islands and has its headquarters at the capital city, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. The team plays at the Centro Insular de Deportes basketball arena in Spain.
The club was founded way back in 1963 inside the Claret School. For many years after being established, the team played under the School’s denomination. After performing successfully at School competitions, the management decided to integrate a senior team on the Spanish Second Division. The team later decided to become an independent division after playing under the Spanish division till 1984. The team’s new statute was approved in May 1985 and henceforth came to exist as Claret Club de Baloncesto. The next few years saw the team switching frequently between First Division B and ACB League.
The team got its current name in 1987-88 season in order to pay homage to the hometown from where the majority came. The team is handled under its current president, Lisandro Hernández and coached by Pedro Martínez. The team uniform consists of Gold and Blue Ultramarine.
In order to match up with the requirements of Spanish sports legislation, the team became a sports public limited company in June 1992, and thus came to be known as Claret, S.A.D for Sociedad Anonima Deportiva, SAD in Spanish. The team has played three seasons with the Spanish “Silver” league and was later promoted to the ACB league after winning the 1994-95 EBA League championships (originally, the Spanish “Silver” league).
