The Detroit Pistons are a professional basketball team playing under the National Basketball Association (NBA) situated in the Detroit metropolitan area. The team was founded in the year 1941 but joined the NBA in 1948. The team is currently owned by William Davidson and is presently training under the head Coach Fillip Saunders. Before entering into the NBA the team was a part of the National Basketball League (NBL) playing at the North Side High School.

Before the beginning of the 1989-90 season, the Pistons moved to the Auburn Hills to play at the Palace of the Auburn Hills. During this period the team traded Dantley for Mark Aguirre, a trade that was immensely criticized by the fans. But the fans were wrong. The team won 63 games totally surpassing the old franchise record and making it the NBA finals. The Pistons went on to defeat the Los Angeles Lakers and win their first NBA League championship.

The Pistons once again were successful in defending the NBA league championship title in 1990. They won 59 games with a third straight division title. The team encountered the Chicago Bulls in the semi-finals in which Michael Jordon was currently at a good form. However the team successfully won over the Bulls by a score of 93-74 and entered into the NBA finals for the third consecutive time. They Pistons were victorious over the Portland Trail Blazers in the finals and won the NBA championship for the 2nd consecutive time.

In 2000-01 season the team suffered a tough time going out by 32-50 record. After such a disappointing result a new coach, Rick Carlisle was hired. Immediately after hiring Carlise as the coach the Pistons saw a tremendous improvement. The team won 50 games for the first time since 1997. In 2003 the Pistons qualified for the Eastern Conference finals in which they were swept by the New Jersey Nets.

In 2004 the Pistons once again made it to the Conference finals. They defeated the defending champions the New Jersey Nets and were once again ready for the NBA finals since 1990 where they defeated the Los Angeles Lakers to win the NBA championship title for the 3rd time.

The Pistons achieved their best overall record in NBA in the year 2005-06. They managed to win their starting 42 games in the season which tied to the 2nd best game start record in the history of NBA. In addition the team also set a record for starting in the same line-up for 73 consecutive matches.

Many famous players such as Larry Brown, Chuck Daly, Joe Dumars, Bob Mcadoo and Fred Zollner have been a part of the team and found their name in the Hall of Famers.

The Palace of the Auburn Hills is the place where the Detroit Pistons play all their home games. The basketball arena has a maximum capacity of 22,076.

In 2007 the Pistons started of the season with a blast by wining 4-0 over the Orlando Magic. On their way to the Eastern Conference finals the pistons were able to defeat the Chicago Bulls making it the first team who had met another team from the central division.
