Swede Halbrook was an American professional basketball player who, at 7 feet 3 inches tall, was the tallest player to play college and professional basketball during his era. He has played 1 season in the National Basketball Association with the Syracuse Nationals.

Harvey Wade "Swede" Halbrook was born on January 30, 1933, in Dresden, Tennessee, USA. He passed away on April 5, 1988, in Portland, Oregon at the age of 55.He stood 221 cm tall and his weight was last listed at 107 kg. He shot right and played center throughout his career.
Off-court issues plagued Halbrook throughout his career. He would reportedly go missing for days, sometimes weeks at a time without explanation.
After his professional career ended, he moved back to Portland and worked various odd jobs. Later in life, he worked as a circus clown, earning the title of the "World's Tallest Clown". He died of a heart attack on April 5, 1988, while riding a Portland city bus.
High School and College Career
Halbrook played high school basketball at Lincoln High School in Portland, Oregon, where he also excelled in track as a high jumper and hurdler. He led Lincoln to a state championship in his senior year, with an impressive performance of 50 points and 34 rebounds in one tournament game.At Oregon State University, Halbrook was featured in Life magazine as the "World's Tallest Basketball Player" in January 1954.
Under coach Slats Gill, he immediately turned the team into a national title contender. In just two seasons (1953-1955), he scored 1,011 points and grabbed 617 rebounds in 48 games, averaging 21.1 points and 12.8 rebounds per game, both the second-highest in program history.
Halbrook earned All-American honors in 1955 and was selected to the All-Pacific Coast Conference First Team in both 1954 and 1955. He still holds Oregon State records for most rebounds in a game (36, which ranks 15th in NCAA history) and most free throw attempts in a game (28).
His college career was cut short when he was suspended for academic deficiencies and refusing to attend classes.
Professional Career
After leaving Oregon State, Halbrook joined the Wichita Vickers of the National Industrial Basketball League in 1955, playing six seasons and helping the team win the national AAU title in 1959.He entered the NBA with the Syracuse Nationals for the 1960-61 season, playing in 79 games and helping the team reach the playoffs. Halbrook was particularly effective in the Eastern Conference semi-finals against Wilt Chamberlain and the Philadelphia Warriors, contributing 15 points and 15 rebounds in the series opener and 12 points with a dozen rebounds in the second game.
In the 1961-62 season, he played 64 games for the Nationals before his professional career ended.
