Born in New York, Derrick Alston began playing basketball at the school level in Hoboken High School in New Jersey.
The 6’11” power forward/center also played for the Duquesne University before he was drafted for the NBA by the Philadelphia 76ers in the 1994 NBA Draft. He played a total of 137 games for Philadelphia scoring 751 points and 521 rebounds.
He later played a mere two games for the Atlanta Hawks in 1996 and scored no points but 4 rebounds.
He then flew overseas to join the New Zealand Breakers in the mid-season of 2007-08. He achieved the top 20 in the league for FG%, shooting at 56.0%, and offensive rebounds and averaged 13.8 ppg and helped the Breakers reach the playoffs for the first time in club history.
