Steve Bucknall is at present head coach of the London Capital, the British Basketball League expansion franchise. After attending Governor Dummer Academy High School in Byfield, Massachusetts, he graduated from the University of California.
For a short period of time, he represented the Los Angeles Lakers in the NBA and thereby became the second Englishman to participate in the United States NBA. After his stint in the NBA was over, he played in many European nations like the United Kingdom, Italy, France and Greece.
Some of the non-NBA teams of which he was a member are Crystal Palace (1983-84), Sunderland (1990-91), Stuttgart, Germany (1991-92), Villeurbanne, France (1992-93), Le Mans, France (1993-94), Thames Valley Tigers (1994-95), London Towers (1995-96), Iraklis Thessaloniki, Greece (1996-98) and Reggio Emilia, Italy (1998-99).

Steve Bucknall was a member of the English basketball team that won the Bronze medal in the Melbourne Commonwealth Games in 2006.
In the 1989-90 season in the NBA, Bucknall took the opportunity of playing in 18 games wherein he received 75 playing minutes.
