Johnson had a brief stint with Pepperdine University (NCAA Div1) in the United States. In the 2007-08 season, he average 3.4 rebounds and 9.4 points for this University. During the 2007 Under 19 World Championships in Serbia, he was a member of Australian team and his team was ranked 5th overall in the competition with a 8-1 record. Johnson was the 2nd highest scorer behind Patrick Mills at the 2007 Under 20 Nationals. He averaged 12.8 rebounds and 24.3 points in the 2007 Championships and was selected in the Tournament All Star Five team. At the end of his tenure in the United States, he returned to Australia and joined the Melbourne Tigers and was called as their “Young Australian Player.” He was a member of 2008 Melbourne Tigers Big V team.
