In 2001, David Barlow started training as part of the Victoria Titans under Brian Goorjian. After 1 year, he participated in college basketball in Denver at Metro State. Mike Dunlap was his coach. Then, he returned to Australia and played for Sandringham Sabres. Here, he was the finalist for 2003 Youth Player of the Year.

He debuted in the NBL in 2004 for Sydney Kings with whom he continued till 2007. In his first 2 seasons, he did not have considerable game time but increased the standard of his game a lot and became one of the prime causes why Sydney team was so successful.

In the 2006 World Championships, he became a part o the Australian national basketball team which was also called as the Boomers. In this tournament, he had an average of 6 points per game. In course of the 2006-07 NBL season, he was starting to find some form but unfortunately had a knee injury. As he was bent upon to move to Victoria, he made a contract with Melbourne Tigers for whom he currently plays. Barlow’s best year as a professional basketballer was the 2007-08 season during which he was the winner of a Player of the Week award and had an average of 5 rebounds per game and 16.6 points per game.
