He is the father of Kenyon Martin Jr., who is also a professional basketball player. He is also the half-brother of Richard Roy.

High School and College Career

He attended Bryan Adams High School in Dallas, Texas. Later, he committed to play college basketball for the University of Cincinnati and was there from 1996 to 2000.

In 2000, he was named the National College Player of the Year and the NABC Defensive Player of the Year. He was also named that year’s Conference USA Player of the Year.

Professional Career

He turned pro in 2000 and was the first overall pick of the 2000 NBA Draft, selected by the New Jersey Nets. He played for the Nets from 2000 to 2004. In 2001, he was named to the NBA All-Rookie First Team. Then in 2004, he was named an NBA All-Star.

From 2004 to 2011, he played for the Denver Nuggets. In 2011, he played in China for the Xinjiang Flying Tigers. Then in 2012, he was signed for a short while with the Los Angeles Clippers. From 2013 to 2014, he was with the New York Knicks. Before he retired in 2015, he played for the Milwaukee Bucks.
