Darryl Augustin
Darryl Jerard Augustin, Jr., or DJ, is a professional basketball player from the United States of America and is known for his exploits as a point guard. Although born in New Orleans, his family had to move out due to Hurricane Katrina and they settled in Missouri City, Texas. Augustin played his senior year ball at the Hightower High School. In New Orleans, he studied at the Brother Martin High School and had led their team to two state championships.
At Hightower, in his senior year, he was known for his precise passing and shooting and led the side to the playoffs. The team ended the season at 26-4. Augustin won a number of awards after his performance including the district 20-5A MVP award. He was named as the Houston Chronicle Player of the Year and also made it to the first team All-Greater Houston as well as the first team for the All-State team. He was also named as a McDonald's All-American and was the starting point guard for the west.
It was in college though when Augustin came into his own. At the University of Texas, in Austin, Augustin started all 35 games in his freshman season and averaged 14.4 points with 6.7 assists per game. He was subsequently named to the All-Big 12 Second Team as well as the Big 12 All Rookie Team. Augustin decided to stay back in college and not worry about getting into the NBA Draft.
He was extremely diligent in his academics as well and scored a 4.0 GPA in his fall 2007 semester to raise his cumulative GPA to 3.64.In 2008, he was named to the first team All-Americans by the College Sports Information Directors of America to become only the second player from the University of Texas, Austin, to get the award. Augustin was also awarded the Bob Cousy award by the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame and was named to the USBWA All-American First Team.
In April of 2008, Augustin finally declared himself eligible for the NBA Draft and forfeited the remaining NCAA eligibility. At the 2008 NBA Draft, the Charlotte Bobcats picked Augustin at 9th overall and he signed a 2-year deal with the Bobcats.
