Manute Bol was a Sudanese-American professional basketball player and political activist who became one of the tallest players in National Basketball Association history and a renowned shot-blocker. He has played in various NBA teams like the Golden State Warriors, Miami Heat, Washington Bullets, and Philadelphia 76ers.

Player Profile and Personal Life

Manute Bol was born on October 16, 1962 (disputed), in Turalei, Sudan (now South Sudan). He stood an incredible 7 feet 7 inches tall and weighed 200 pounds during his playing career.

Bol came from a family of extraordinarily tall Dinka people. He was married twice and had ten children, including current NBA player Bol Bol.

Early Life

Bol grew up in Turalei during a period of relative peace in Sudan. He helped raise livestock and avoided military service due to his height. His name "Manute" means "special blessing" in the Dinka language, given to him after his mother delivered two sets of stillborn twins.

Bol began playing basketball as a teenager after being recruited by local teams in Wau and Khartoum.

Initially unfamiliar with the sport, he focused on blocking shots and rebounding under his coach's guidance. He later joined the Sudan men's national basketball team and played games across Africa and Europe.

In 1982, Coach Don Feeley convinced Bol to move to the United States to pursue basketball professionally.

Despite challenges with language barriers and cultural adaptation, Bol's height and defensive skills earned him opportunities in college basketball at the University of Bridgeport and eventually led him to the NBA.

College Career

Bol did not have a traditional high school career in the United States. He played college basketball for the University of Bridgeport Purple Knights in 1984-1985.

Professional Career

Bol was selected by the Washington Bullets in the 1985 NBA Draft.

He played for four NBA teams, Golden State Warriors, Miami Heat, the Bullets, and Philadelphia 76ers, for over 10 seasons from 1985 to 1995. Bol was known for his exceptional shot-blocking ability, leading the league in blocks twice (1986, 1989).

After his NBA career, Bol played briefly in Italy and the CBA. He is the only NBA player to retire with more career blocked shots (2,086) than points scored (1,599).

Off the court, Bol was dedicated to humanitarian efforts in Sudan. He used much of his NBA earnings to support Sudanese refugees and worked to promote human rights in his home country.

Death

Manute Bol died on June 19, 2010, at the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville due to acute kidney failure and complications from Stevens-Johnson Syndrome.

The rare skin condition caused severe blisters that left him unable to eat or drink for days. Bol had returned from Sudan shortly before his death after working on humanitarian projects despite his deteriorating health.

Bol's memorial service was held at the Washington National Cathedral on June 29, 2010. Tributes poured in from around the world for his contributions to basketball and humanitarian work.
