Ahearn did his schooling from the De Smet Jesuit High School in Creve Coeur and attended the Missouri State University where he played for the college team called the Missouri State Bears. Playing for the Bears, Ahearn holds records for free throw with 97.5% in a single season. He also held the record for three pointers with the Missouri State University with 276 points. In 2004, Ahearn earned the Missouri Valley Conference Freshman of the Year award. In 2007, he was chosen by the Dakota Wizards in the National Basketball Association development league. He was chosen as the Rookie of the Year in the D-League and averaged 19 points per game, 3.5 assists and a free throw percentage of 96%. In 2008, Miami Heat of the NBA signed Ahearn on a 10 day contract.
