As of August 31st, Ricky Rubio has decided to stay in Spain for at least two more years. This is not good news for the Minnesota Timberwolves. He was supposed to be their point guard for the next ten years.
Now, he might not even play for Minnesota ever. This selection was questionable at the draft, and now it appears the critics were right.
Rubio is a rare player with a lot of experience at such a young age. He has played in many international competitions including the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing.
He has a very special set of skills, great passing, court vision, and a great feel for the game.
On draft night the Timberwolves covered for themselves by also picking Syracuse point guard Johnny Flynn.
The Timberwolves cannot afford to be striking out on rookie players. Last year they traded O.J. Mayo for Kevin Love. While Love had a nice rookie campaign, he will never be as good as Mayo.
The Timberwolves are young and inexperienced. They cannot afford to be missing on prospects if they want to contend in a very competitive western conference.
