John Weathers
John David Weathers is a professional baseball player from the United States of America and plays as a pitcher. Weathers was a student at the Motlow State Community College and after playing baseball with the college team, he was picked by the Toronto Blue Jays in the 3rd round of the 1988 MLB Draft.
Weathers made his MLB debut with the Blue Jays three years later, but failed to shine. He was placed in the expansion draft in 1992 and the Florida Marlins picked him up. He stayed with the Marlins for 4 years and played slowly for their minor league affiliates before being traded out to the New York Yankees in exchange for Mark Hutton. In 1996, the Yankees went on to win the World Series and as part of their roster, Weathers too got his hands on the ring although he never played any active part in the title winning performance.
In 1997, the Cincinnati Reds claimed him off waivers and the following year, it was the Milwaukee Bucks who did the same. From 1998 to 2001, Milwaukee was home to Weathers where he struggled to make an impact and soon, was doing the rounds around the franchisees again. He was traded out to the Chicago Cubs in 2001 and at the end of the season, he became a free agent.
New York was the next destination for Weathers and the Mets brought him into their 40-man roster. He pitched for the Mets for 3 seasons and then, along with Jeremy Griffiths, was traded out to the Houston Astros in exchange for Richard Hidalgo. In September, later that year, Weathers was released by the Astros and he headed to the Florida Marlins the very next day.
At the end of the 2004 season, Weathers was again without a team as the Marlins refused to offer him a new contract. That prompted a move to the Cincinnati Reds where he has stayed ever since. His performance improved as he began imposing himself into the playing lineup. Weathers maintained a respectable ERA that hovered under 4.00 with this, his 10th team in 18 years. In 2007, he began specializing as the team's closer and went on to make 33 saves and it finally seems that he may have settled down for a long term commitment.
