While the first two times, Hammock decided to refuse his initial two offers in favour of college. However, when picked by the Diamondbacks, he went aboard.

Between 1998 to 2002, he was mainly a part of minor leagues although in 2003, he did his get his shot at the big time. These were good enough to earn him a place in the All Star Rookie team for the 2003 Topps All-Star Rookie Roster, as the third catcher.

In 2003, he was called up to the first team after an injury virus struck the senior members of the squad. Along with other youngsters like Matt Kata, Alex Clintron and Brandon Webb, Robby was part of the "Baby Backs" of the Arizona Diamondbacks, who got a chance to play in the big league. The team had a winning season but failed to make it to the playoffs. In 2004, he picked his game up a notch and in 62 starts, he had 46 games as catcher, with a .241 batting average and 16 doubles for the season.

For the next three years, he only managed to play in the minor leagues and continues to be a part of the Diamondbacks.
