The 1996 MLB Draft saw the Texas Rangers picking up Davis in the 10th round. So began his minor league career with the Gulf Coast Rangers, an affiliate of the Texas Rangers. In his debut season, he had a 3-1 record with a 1.90 ERA in the 8 games he played. Davis pitched in 42 innings.

This performance earned him a spot with the AAA Oklahoma RedHawks. At the RedHawks, he went a step further with a 7-0 record and a 3.00 ERA.
Although Davis got a taste of Major League action in 1999, he remained in the AAA leagues as well for the next four years before going permanently to the big league. In the four year period between 1999 and 2006, Davis played for a number of Major League clubs such as the Texas Rangers, the Toronto Blue Jays and the Milwaukee Brewers, with records of 21-21, 4-6 and 26-25 respectively.
In 2007, Davis was traded to the Arizona Diamondbacks along with Dave Kryznel in return for Johnny Estrada, Greg Aquino and Claudio Vargas. In his first season with the Diamondbacks, Davis had a 13-12 record and an ERA of 4.25 with 144 strikeouts in 192 2/3rd innings. On the 29th of July, 2008, Davis pitched a perfect game up until the 7th inning.
In March of 2008, Davis was diagnosed with Thyroid Cancer. He played two games before taking time off for surgery to remove the thyroid gland. After a 4-6 week recovery period, Davis underwent tests with the team doctors to ensure that he was cancer-free. Convinced, he was brought back into the ball club but was started over in the minor leagues to get his rhythm back.
Davis made his return against the Atlanta Braves in May of 2008.
