Gregory Thomas Smith is a professional baseball player from the United States of America who plays as a pitcher. A graduate from the Louisiana State University, Smith was picked by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the sixth round of the 2005 MLB Draft.
After a couple of years in the minor leagues, Smith was traded out to the Oakland Athletics in a deal that also saw Brett Anderson, Dana Eveland, Carlos Gonzalez Chris Carter and Aaron Cunningham go to the Athletics in exchange for Dan Haren and Connor Robertson. His debut came in April 2008 when he pitched 6 innings, giving away two earned runs. He had 16 pickoffs in the season in the 32 games that he played, and started, for the Athletics. In doing so, he tied the MLB record for pickoffs.
In November 2008, after posting a 4.16 ERA with the Athletics, Smith was traded out to the Colorado Rockies with Huston Street and Carlos Gonzalez in exchange for Matt Holiday.
