Net posts or tennis court posts are the posts located outside the tennis court where the tennis net is attached. For both singles and doubles courts, the net post stands at 3 feet from each side of the court. The dimensions of the nest post are defined, implemented and regulated by the International Tennis Federation or the ITF. The net posts hold up the net and are considered to be essential in the game of tennis.

The Structural Component of the Net Post in Tennis

One of the most important aspects in the stability of the net posts used in tennis is the foundation. Post installations are only good and effective if the footings that support them are structurally sound and able. This portion of the net post is not seen but should be considered as an integral part of the system. The footing should be able to resist frost heave for areas in cold climates as well as resist movement most especially during periods when the net is under tension. The court surface should not be cracked when pressure and force is experienced by the foundations of the net posts. The base should be established below the average debt of the frost line and should be wide enough. In hard courts, it would be ideal to have footings with round tops to be able to prevent cracks from radiating on the pavement surface.

The Evolution of the Net Posts

Net posts also known as tennis posts have had several evolution since it was used over the course of tennis history. Old net posts are winch type and feature a lever-action mechanism to be able to apply tension to the net cable. This type of net posts can post a hazard to players because of its sharp teeth that may catch clothing as well as fingers of players. This also features an exposed crank that has the tendency to over tighten the net cables leading to damage to the net posts and the footings. At present, internal-wind posts are being used in most tennis courts. It features removable or folding crank handles that can be secured or removed after tension is set on the net. Tampering and player injury is less likely with this type of net posts.
