Many tennis fans have expressed their sadness over the news that tennis star Serena Williams is not on the official entry list for this years Wimbledon.

40-year-old Williams has not competed professionally since she suffered an injury in last years Wimbledon opening rounds. But she has hinted at plans of a comeback earlier this year.

Her continued absence from the sport has sparked rumors of her plans to retire. Should she fail to play this year, she will fall off the WTA rankings due to a years inactivity.

Other absentees on the list include Venus Williams and Roger Federer.

Federer had earlier stated, following third knee surgery, that it was unlikely he was going to play at Wimbledon.

Unlike Federer, who has always maintained his low chances of playing at some of this years tournaments, Williams had indicated she had plans of a comeback, specifically at the grass-court major.

We’ve been talking about my comeback and he’s been hyping me up and getting me ready for Wimbledon. Can’t wait!” said Williams.

Had Williams wanted to join this years tournament, she could have used her protected ranking to gain automatic entry.

While she isnt on the official list, Wimbledon organizers have hinted that the 23-time Grand Slam winner could be given a wildcard entry.

Wildcards for the Qualifying Competition and Main Draw events will be announced shortly before The Championships 2022,” a statement read.

Seedings for The Championships 2022 will be announced shortly before the fortnight and follow world ranking.

Fans the world over have expressed their sadness over the news with many hoping that she does make a wildcard appearance, although that seems unlikely at this point.
