Djokovic was 50-50 about participating at the summer Games after his recent Grand Slam win. He was unsure due to the threat of the COVID-19 pandemic and the fact fans wont be allowed to spectate.
However, the 34-year-old champion confirmed on Thursday that he would compete. In his post on Twitter, he said that he would be joining Team Serbia for Tokyo Olympics in eight days. He also said in his post that he already booked his flight for Tokyo and mentioned he couldnt disappoint his little friend Koujirou.
Djokovic was undecided for a while about participating at the Tokyo Games after retaining his Wimbledon title. He was unsure as the Tokyo Olympics organizers announced fans would not be allowed on the venue due to the recent spike in coronavirus infections.
The Serbian star received his third Grand Slam title of the year about a week ago at the All England Club. He lifted his first at the Australian Open, the second at the French Open, and now aiming to complete the Golden Slam by winning gold at the Tokyo Olympic Games.
The only player to ever accomplish a Golden Slam is Steffi Graf from Germany, achieving it in 1988. Several players have already announced their withdrawal from the summer Games, such as Daniel Evans and Johanna Konta. Both withdrew because of testing positive for COVID-19.
The Tokyo Olympics takes place from the 24th of July to the 8th of August.
