The Spain national basketball team is the basketball team representing Spain in international competitions. The team plays under the FIBA Europe zone. The Spanish team played its first game in the Eurobasket in 1935 which was held by the International Basketball Federation’s FIBA Europe continental federation.
In the preliminary round the Spanish team defeated Belgium and in the semi finals they defeated Czechoslovakia and in this way qualified to play against Latvia in the final. In this match the Spanish team lost by a score of 24-18 and had to be content with the silver medal.
The teams first ever greatest success came during the Summer Olympics in 1984 which were held in Los Angeles where the team reached the finals to play against the USA national team. With the likes of young Michael Jordon and Patrick Ewing the strong USA team eventually won the Gold medal. But more than the USA team, it was a huge success for the Spain national team to make it to the finals. During the 2006 FIBA World championship Spain defeated the Greek national team and won the gold medal on 3 September 2006. This match which had the eventual score of 70-47 was contested in Saitama in Japan. This was the first time in the World Championships that the gold medal was won by the Spanish national basketball team. The Most Valuable Player of the tournament was Pau Gasol and the All-tournament team was Jorge Garbajosa. The 2007 Eurobasket was hosted by Spain. During this tournament the same dozen players that had won the 2006 World Championship in Japan for Spain reached the final of this tournament. Due to this the expectations were raised regarding the Spanish national team of winning the first Eurobasket after winning the FIBA World Championship. In the final the Russian national basketball team defeated the Spanish team and Spain was awarded the silver medal.
