Alberto Berasategui
Born on June 28, 1973, Alberto Berasategui is a Spanish tennis player. He began playing tennis at the age of seven and turned pro in 1991 right after becoming the European junior champion, establishing a reputation as one of the best clay court players in his division mainly for his extreme western grip or a Hawaiian forehand grip, according to some, which allows him to hit both forehands and backhands with the same side of the racket. This grip proved useful when he fought Agassi in the 1998 Aussie Open, which made Agassi to comment that Berasategui’s forehand was a deadly weapon.
The Spanish player won his first top level singles title in Sao Paulo in 1993 and in 1994, he won seven out of the nine finals that he attained. It was also in 1994 when he qualified for his first and only Grand Slam at the French Open where he was defeated by fellow Spaniard Sergi Bruguera.
All in all Berasategui holds a total of 14 top-level singles titles and 1 tour title in doubles, earning a total of US$ 4,676,187 in prize money. He won his last singles title in Estoril in 1998.
