Michael Belkin
Michael Belkin started tennis young at 12 years old he and his moved to Miami Beach from Montreal for the sake of his sport. While attending the Miami Beach high school he held the men’s champion title, as well as the national junior (18 and under) champion.
He started playing senior pro tennis in 1969, first at the French Open and then the Cincinnati Championships, moving on to the US Clay championships. He later played on the Canadian Open where he reached the semis and later in the US Open where he reached the second round in singles. He joined the professional tour circuit later in his career.
Belkin played for the Davis Cup in 1966 when Canada was on its way to the quarterfinals, defeating the Finns but later bowing out to the French team in Roland Garros. In 1971 he helped the team achieve its second tie in the year, but the Canadian team eventually lost to the Mexican team with a score of 2-3. They again lost to the Mexican team a year later in Vancouver with exactly the same score.
His last Davis Cup match was against Columbian tennis player Ivan Molina, against whom he lost the first set 7-9.
Belkin was one of Canada’s top ranked players between 1966 and 1972. He has a 17-12 Davis Cup record and a record of 14-7 in singles.
He was inducted into the Canadian Tennis Hall of Fame in 1994. He took over the position of director of Sonesta Beach Resort on Key Biscayne, Florida, but he has been with the resort since 1993.
