Algernon Kingscote
Algeron Robert Fitzhardinge Kingscote or better known as Algernon Kingscote was born on February 3, 1888 in Bangalore, Karnataka, India; which is the capital of the Indian State of Karnataka. It is geographically located on the Deccan Plateau in the south-eastern part of Karnataka, Bangalore. Though he was British in origin, he spent most of his life in one of the most populated countries in the world. At the age of 31 he won the men’s singles event at the Australian Championships in 1919.
The Australian Open is the first of the four Grand Slam Tennis Tournaments which is held every year. It is held on January at the Melbourne Park. The first tournament which was in 1905 through 1987 was contested on grass. In 1988, they shifted to holding tournaments on hard courts still at Melbourne Park.
Like any other Grand Slam Tournament, they have the men and women’s singles competition, men and women’s mixed doubles and junior and masters competition as well.
Algeron Kingscote also competed in the 1924 Summer Olympics which was held in Paris. During the competition, he was 36 years old. He showed much energy for his age, taking home three wins in the match number 5, 10 and 34.
This tennis legend has given much pride to his country Great Britain died in 1964 at the age of 76 in Surrey, England, Great Britain. During his life, Kingscote definitely lived his dream to the fullest and will continue to be a legend on his field.
