Nancy Gunter
Nancy Richey hailed from San Angelo, Texas and was born on August 23, 1942. She made herself a career in tennis after she won two Grand Slam singles titles in 1967 and 1968. She grabbed the championship at the Australian Championships in 1967, and the French Open in 1968.
Richey was one of the first tennis players that gave recognition and honor to the United States in different championship titles. She and her partner won the Wimbledon doubles championship in 1966, and also the US Open in 1965 and 1966 as well. Richey finished second in the 1966 Australian Championships, as well as in the French Championships. In that same year, she also finished second in the US Championships. The years 1967 and 1968 were good years for her career as she garnered two Grand Slam championships during those years. However, in the US Open in 1969, she also finished second after being beaten by Margaret Court. Despite all these, she was ranked second in the Top Ten World Tennis Players (Women’s Category) in 1969.
Richey was married for seven years to Kenneth Gunter in 1970 through 1976. She however got divorced after and assumed back her maiden name. She is also the sibling of another famous tennis player, Cliff Richey. All in all, Richey won 69 titles at the U.S. Women’s Clay Court Championships from 1963 up to 1968. Her great achievements in the field of sports were finally recognized in 2003 when she was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame.
