Mervyn Rose
Mervyn Rose is a former Australian professional tennis player. He was born on January 23, 1930 in New South Wales, Australia and turned professional in the year 1959. He is a renowned coach for both known and up and coming tennis stars.
Before Mervyn Rose became a renowned coach for tennis stars, he started out as an Australian tennis sensation. He was quite an accomplished singles and doubles tennis player. In 1954, he won the Australian singles championship. In 1958, he won the French and Italian singles titles. His doubles career doesn't fall far behind either. He has won four doubles titles in Grand Slam events including his doubles victory in the 1952 US doubles championship. Rose's tennis career highlight was winning the 1952 US doubles championship together with American partner, Vic Seixas. They both stopped Australian Hall of Famers Ken McGregor and Frank Sedgman. Rose was also an integral member in the Davis Cup Australian team for the years 1951, 1952 and 1957.
Rose was in the World Top Ten five times in the 1950s. After he retired from professional tennis, he started coaching. He has coached known tennis players the likes of Margaret Court, Kerry Harris, Richard Fromberg, Ian Fletcher, Magdelina Gryzbowska, Billie Jean King, Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario, Eleni Daniilidou, Nadia Petrova and Caroline Schnieder. Rose can still be seen at most Grand Slam events, assisting up and coming tennis players wanting to make it big in the world of tennis.
In 2000, Rose was awarded with the Australian Sports Medal. In 2001, he was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame and in 2002 was inducted into the Australian Tennis Hall of Fame. In the year 2006, Rose was presented with the Order of Australia Medal.
