Monica Seles was born on December 12, 1973, in Novi Sad, SR Serbia, Yugoslavia. She currently resides in Sarasota, Florida in the United States. She initially represented Yugoslavia at the start of her career but switched to representing the United States in 1994.Seles stands 178 cm tall and she is left-handed with a two-handed backhand that she can swing from both sides. She turned pro in 1989 and retired in 2008 although she has not played since 2003.
She has been coached by Jelena Genčić and her father Karolj Seles. In her career, she earned a total of US$14,891,762 in prize money.
In April 1993, Seles was stabbed by a fan of German tennis player Steffi Graf during a match, while she was sitting down between games. She did not return to playing until two years after the stabbing incident.
Career
Seles has a total of 9 Grand Slam singles titles and she made it to 13 finals. Her first Grand Slam win was the 1990 French Open, beating Graf in the finals. Her last Grand Slam title was the 1996 Australian Open, beating Anke Huber. She came in second in two more finals after that at the 1996 US Open, losing to Graf, and at the 1998 French Open, losing to Arantxa Sanchez Vicario.In addition to her Grand Slam wins, she has also won the WTA Finals thrice – winning in 1990, 1991, and 1992. Her last WTA Finals final was in 2000 but she lost to Martina Hingis.
Seles has also won 9 Majors titles in her career. Her first was the 1990 Miami Open and her last majors win was the 2000 Italian Open. As a doubles player, she has also won three Majors titles – all at the Italian Open in 1990, 1991, and 1992. She was partnered with different players during all three wins.
She last played in 2003 but did not retire officially until 2008. In April 2009, she released a memoir titled: Getting A Grip: On My Body, My Mind, My Self.
